FOUNDATION is your base. As a base, your home needs to be a safe and comfortable place to be. It is so important to live in harmony especially with all the stress that goes on in our daily life. To me, simple proportions and clean lines give me harmony. Less is more and too much clutter definitely creates stress. Think about what makes you comfortable in your home. Clean out and remove things you never use without getting rid of a few sentimental things. Make a list of things you need to get in order to make your home a safe and comfortable place to be.
FUNCTIONALITY is about your lifestyle. Your lifestyle makes a huge difference in how you need your home to be. Are you single or are you married with 3 small children? You need your home to be somewhat functional but yet not boring and you want your eyes to rest on beautiful things but not to the point that it feels as if you are in a museum where you can’t move without being afraid of breaking something. My biggest thing issue is space. I don’t work well in cramped up areas so if I don’t have the space, I need to make it feel as if I do by using less or smaller pieces. I also love to entertain so for me it is very important to have a representative home where I can entertain my friends.
Functionality is also about your budget. What are you comfortable with spending on your home? Maybe you prefer quality rather than quantity and prefer to get a few high end pieces, or you don’t want to spend a fortune on your home due to a lot of traveling or other interests that you rather spend your money on. This is all individual and you need to think about what works for you, make a budget for yourself.
FEELING is your passion. Things that make your home represent you. What are your favorite colors? Do you have any weaknesses and do you collect on art? What are your favorite period styles or designers? If you are not sure, compare a chair from each period and see which one you liked the best. Pull tear sheets from magazines of things you like. It doesn’t matter weather it’s an object, a color or a feeling of a whole picture, whatever makes an impression on you helps me get an idea of who you are. Once we find your look, we will know what path to go!
